The Role of the Preceptor module introduces you to the preceptor roles such as role model, advocate, coach, evaluator and socializer. It also shows you how to appropriately use these roles with the new nurse. Also covered are the ethical, legal and regulatory issues in the health care industry. Finally, this module shares the need for self-care for the preceptor, identifying stressors and strategies to support
preceptors.
Communication in the Preceptor Role module takes into consideration all of the factors that influence communication. Learning styles, gender, generational issues and personality styles just to name a few.
This module gives you some different ideas on how to provide instruction, evaluation and feedback as well as a section on how to use feedback and evaluation effectively and not offensively. Communication tools for teamwork and collaboration are included as well as a section on how to manage conflict.
The Transition Process: Assessment to Evaluation covers just as the title describes; the process from beginning to end of the transition process. Included is P. Benner’s model on the transition from novice to expert as well as Marlene Kramer’s work on Reality Shock. Planning on a successful transition of the new nurse brings us to competency-based performance, quality and safety competencies, daily planning, communication and documentation and modifying plans; which are all covered in this module as well as how to effectively implement the plan. The last section covers the evaluation and performance feedback including some preferred guidelines which may be very helpful.

In Part 3 you will observe a scenario where the preceptor interacts with the new nurse and addresses the new nurse’s reaction to the medication error and physician response.
This module is designed to allow you to apply the concepts you have learned in the Transition to Practice Preceptor Modules.
