This module provides a review of key concepts involved in effective communication in the preceptor–orientee relationship. You will consider individual factors that play a role in communication, ways of managing conflict within the precepting relationship, and identify opportunities and processes for developing the new nurse’s communication skills during the orientation period. You will learn about the importance of timely and appropriate feedback, teaching the orientee strategies for identifying and managing conflict and communication tools that the new graduate nurse should master during orientation in order to function safely and effectively as part of the healthcare team.
Unit 1: Did You Hear What I Meant? Factors that Influence Communication Objectives
1. Describe the building blocks of communication.
2. Examine individual factors that affect the way we communicate.
Unit 2: Providing Instruction, Evaluation and Feedback Objectives
1. Review behaviors and characteristics associated with new graduate nurses.
2. Describe methods for providing effective instruction for new graduate nurses.
3. Define strategies for providing appropriate and meaningful verbal feedback for new graduate nurses
4. Identify the purpose of written documentation of orientation progress.
Unit 3: Communication Tools for Teamwork and Collaboration Objectives
1. Define key communication tools used to relay information safely and effectively in the clinical setting.
2. Describe opportunities/strategies to develop communication skills in the new graduate nurse.
Unit 4: Managing Conflict Objectives
1. Identify areas of conflict that can occur during the precepting experience.
2. Describe methods for managing conflict within the preceptor/new graduate relationship.
3. Recognize the skills needed by the new graduates to deal with peers and other professionals who create challenging relationships or situations.

Upon successful completion of each module participants will earn ANCC contact hours.
